John Ellman (Boris Karloff) has been framed for murder by a gang of racketeers. He is unfairly tried and despite the fact that his innocence has been proven, he is sent to the electric chair and executed. Dr. Evan Beaumont (Edmund Gwenn) retrieves his dead body and revives it, as part of his experiments to reanimate a dead body and discover what happens to the soul after death....。苏兹（Kerry Fox 饰）、泰特（Sally Stockwell 饰）等一伙极富冒险精神的年轻人决定驾船从新西兰前往斐济，享受他们惊险刺激的假期之旅。当船行驶在南太平洋中央时，海上突起大雾，所有通讯全部中断。正当他们焦急之时，一艘破旧的小渔船由远及近出现在他们面前。船上有一个奄奄一息的希腊人（John Rhys-Davies 饰），他自称知晓欺骗死神的方法，迄今为止已活了数个世纪。而如今大限临近，地狱三途河的摆渡人正摇橹前来，欲将其带往另一个世界。 年轻人虽然对他的说辞不甚相信，但从希腊人上船那一刻起，诡异之事便接连发生……。
