When Constantine learned of Katherine's whereabouts and imprisonment at the hands of Maxentius, he led his army from York in a desperate bid to save her.。一夜暴雨，下了个沟满壕平。贫农社员“种瓜迷”宋老发，为队里种的四亩上好的汴梁大西瓜被淹在水里。宋老发心急如焚，急忙放水保瓜，没想到北、南、西三面都不能放水，东面是自己的自留地种着四分芝麻。怎么办？宋老发救瓜心切来不及和老伴商量，冲毁了四分芝麻，救了队里的四亩瓜。宋大妈来到瓜园送饭，想顺便看看自己的芝麻，宋老发怕老伴发现自留地被冲，便千方百计地阻拦宋大妈，巧妙地用计得到宋大妈的同意往东放水。后来宋老发还是把真相挑明，二人因此争执起来。大妈心疼芝麻想把放水口堵住，老发为保西瓜不同意大妈的意见，二人正在相持不下时，他们的女儿、妇女队长宋国英赶来，她问清原因后，与爸爸一起帮助妈妈认清了个人利益应服从集体利益的道理，宋大妈毅然同意了放水救瓜。前波未平，后波又起。救了队里的四亩瓜，更要救西队四百亩好庄稼。国英及时提出；为响应党的团结治水的号召，经队委会研究决定，必须从瓜园挖沟排水，急救西队四百亩庄稼。宋老发思想毫无准备，心疼队里的西瓜，舍不得扒瓜园，可他又不忍心泡坏西队的庄稼，内心矛盾重重，左右为难。经过国英的耐心说服，他彻底认清了个人服从集体，小集体应该服从大集体的道理，决定亲手扒瓜园。
